IN THIS ISSUEWelcome to your new issue of Digital CameraWe all have a moment when we were bitten by the photo bug. I was first seduced by the magic of photography back in the analogue days of film, chemistry and darkrooms. I still remember watching, mesmerised as images slowly appeared in the developer, cast in the red glow of a ‘safelight’. Fast-forward 30 odd years, and everything’s a whole lot faster, dryer and generally better. However, there’s a still a part of me that hankers after the old, wet and messy processes. And that feeling of lovely handcrafted prints is hard to replicate in the digital darkroom. So this month, in a cunning combination of digital and analogue techniques, we explore the creative possibilities of old and new theologies, using a modern-day SLR (Nikon D800) and the alternative cyanotype…1 min

EXPERT PHOTO ADVICE10 things to try right now1 Brilliant bluebells Capture the richness of forest flora in spring Spring is the perfect time to photograph a forest floor richly carpeted with bluebells. It makes a wonderfully evocative image that you will treasure all year round. Kilian Schönberger took this striking shot in the famous Hallerbos Forest, near Brussels in Belgium. “I took it around an hour after sunrise, as the fog was suddenly crouching between the trees,” he explains. “There was no fog at sunrise, but luckily I stayed long enough to capture this fine forest mood.” You can’t blame Kilian for being tempted to call it a day: he’d driven 220km overnight from Cologne in Germany to get to this spot, setting off shortly after midnight. “It’s possibly the best spot for bluebell photography on the…2 min
EXPERT PHOTO ADVICE2 Take to the streetsFrench photographer and legend Robert Doisneau had a great eye for street photography, and he was well-known for his images of Paris and its suburbs taken in the 1950s. In the latest collection of his work, simply called Robert Doisneau, which has been curated by his long-term friend and Taschen author Jean Claude Gautrand, you are able to explore his life’s work and get inspired. “Doisneau focused on the irony, playfulness and romantic scenes that he saw on the streets” Unlike many of his photojournalist peers who were more fixated on photographing the hardship and the grind of day-to-day life, Doisneau focused on the irony, playfulness and romantic scenes that he saw on the streets. It was fleeting moments, playful characters and emotional encounters that got Doisneau interested. Shooting mostly…1 min
